Beyond the Score: The Proxy Threat
Ever had someone challenge you by claiming to have a "hidden army" behind them? You're likely dealing with a proxy threat.
This move is a subtle form of coercion without accountability. It's designed to catch you off guard and trigger your own insecurities, making you feel outnumbered by a force that doesn't exist.
The best antidote? Refuse to engage with the phantom army. Bring the conversation back to the person in front of you. Instead of asking, "What are the boardโs concerns?" ask, "What are your concerns?" This powerful act of leadership allows you to step outside the paradox and create a new way forward.

Beyond the Score: Dealing With The Catch-22 Conundrum
Feeling trapped by an impossible choice? You might be facing a Catch-22.
The phrase, coined by Joseph Heller, describes a paradox where the very solution you're seeking is what prevents you from getting the help you need. Itโs a maddening situation that can cause both professional and personal frustration. For example: "To be a strong, respected leader, you canโt show weakness." And yet, the very act of never asking for help makes you weak.
You can't solve a Catch-22 by pulling harder on the knot. The solution is often to stop pulling and simply let go. This is a powerful act of leadership.
Learn more about how to spot and navigate these leadership paradoxes in this week's blog post, The Catch-22 Conundrum.
Beyond the Score: Dealing With The Double Bind
Ever feel like you're caught in a "no-win" scenario? That's the feeling of a double bindโa concept from psychological research that's all too common in leadership. From conflicting messages at work to the internal struggle between ambition and burnout, these paradoxes can leave us feeling stuck. Acknowledging them is the first step toward finding a way out. Read my latest post to learn more about how to navigate these challenges and make powerful choices.

Beyond the Score: Cognitive Dissonance

Beyond the Score: Broken Mirrors
That feeling of internal unrest often comes from a simple source: a broken mirror that reflects a distorted image of the people around us. My latest blog post, "Beyond the Score: Broken Mirrors," is out now and reveals how a common cognitive bias, the Fundamental Attribution Error, can negatively impact how we lead and relate to others.

Beyond the Score: Navigating the Silent Space Between the Notes
A musical score has notes, but the true performance is in the restsโthe silent spaces where the musician pauses to breathe and prepare. Your leadership is the same. My latest blog post, "Beyond the Score," is a summary of the past several weeks, exploring how to find peace in those silent spaces by learning to rest, reflect, and reappraise our internal habits.

Beyond the Score: The Danger of Anger
Ever fantasize about that perfect comeback or argument you had after a tough conversation? It feels good, right? But the danger is in the dehumanization of the person you're fantasizing about. Itโs an easy trap for leaders to fall into. My new post on the blog shows you how to break the cycle and start solving problems instead of just imagining them.

Beyond the Score: The Myth of the Lonely Leader
Is your leadership leaving you feeling isolated? We often think loneliness is a noble burden, but what if it's rooted in our misguided perceptions? The truth is, our ego can create a massive distance between us and our team. Just like Mr. Incredible, who believed he was so exceptional he didn't need anyone else, we can fall into the same trap.
Read my latest post, "The Myth of the Lonely Leader," to discover how to break free from self-imposed isolation.

Beyond the Score: The Impact of Expectation on Perception
Ever had a bad expectation that turned out to be completely wrong? My wife and I went to see Wicked, and it taught me a huge lesson about how expectations can impact our perceptions. It's a key lesson for leaders. You can read more about it in my latest blog post.

Beyond the Score: Blind Spots
Ever feel like you're driving blind? That's what leadership is like without self-awareness. Just like my old car's massive blind spot, we all have hidden flaws or biases that are obvious to our team but invisible to us. The good news? We can learn to see them. Read my latest blog post to learn how to navigate your blind spots and drive your team to success.

Beyond the Score: Carrying the Load of Expectations
As a conductor, one of the most frustrating rehearsals came after a long break. I was ready to hit the ground running, but my students were prepared for a slow crawl. We walked away from the same experience with completely different perceptions. Mismatched expectations are a powerful force, shaping our reality in the workplace and in life.

BEYOND THE SCORE: Navigating the Inner World of Leadership
Are you a leader who tends to look outward when stress hits?
We often point to volatile markets, impossible deadlines, or difficult people as the source of our anxiety. And while those pressures are real, what if the greatest stress isn't on your calendar or team, but in you? It's not about being the problem, but about acknowledging a deeper truth.
