Your leadership TONE starts with VISION
In music, before the first note is ever played, a musician has already made two critical decisions:
What do I want to sound like?
How loud am I going to play?
The answers to those two questions determine what needs to happen physically and mentally before sound is produced.
In leadership, those two questions show up differently. The first question relates to intended vision. The second addresses meaningful contributions.
If we want to have a greater impact on our organizations, we must start by understanding where we are in our leadership journey. To do that, we must first define what we aspire to be.
Success at work and in life is less about achieving goals and more about fulfilling roles. We aren’t one-dimensional beings, and neither is our leadership! Therefore, our leadership tone isn’t defined by what we want to achieve. It is more about who we want to be.
Goals mark moments. Roles shape identity.
So, what do you want to sound like? What do you want to be known for on your team?
What do you want your contribution in each of your roles to be?
How do you create impact within those roles?
What behaviors do you engage in to bring that impact to life?
Like a conductor without musicians, movement without direction is just wasted effort. That direction must be clear and specific. Before we can help establish a vision for our teams, we must first be able to articulate our own. Just like a dance needs choreography to bring meaning to motion, our leadership needs vision to bring purpose to progress.
