Everything starts with TONE
I was standing in front of a concert band the other day trying to solve a tuning problem. And I was reminded again of a truth in music making: everything starts with TONE.
Tuning… timing… balance… none of it matters if musicians aren’t producing characteristic, centered sounds.
A musician’s “tone” is their best contribution to the group. No matter how fast or slow - how high or low - how loud or how soft the music is, musicians must be able to create and contribute their best version of the ideal sound to the group.
And here’s the reality we run into over and over again: you can’t tune a bad tone.
Sound travels in waves. Tuning adjusts the wavelength (pitch) but tone is determined by how the sound is produced. If the vibration itself is unfocused or inefficient, no amount of tuning will fix it. You’re adjusting the note, not the quality of the sound.
The same is true of teams.
Misalignment rarely shows up as open disagreement. More often, it shows up in quieter ways—unclear roles, duplicated effort, and people working hard without a shared definition of success.
And just like in music, you can’t tune a team that doesn’t know what sound it’s trying to produce.
This is where leadership matters most.
Effective teams are built by leaders who are first willing to do the hard work of clarifying their own contribution—what they bring, how they show up, and the tone they set for others. Only then are they equipped to help others find clarity in their role, purpose, and impact on the group.
Over the next several weeks, I want to help bring some focused efficiency to your leadership tonality. Regardless of where you sit within the ensemble-team structure, contributing your best sounds starts with your vision of the ideal.
This is all part of a larger conversation surrounding leadership explored in my book IN TONE Leadership. And for more in depth help, I want to encourage you to join The Conductor’s Circle mastermind experience. Read more about it at THIS LINK.
See you at the next rehearsal!
