Your Leadership Tonality - A Vision of Possibility
There is an interesting conundrum every music conductor faces.
They don’t actually make any music.
Without musicians in front of them, the conductor just looks like a crazy person standing at the front of the room flapping his arms.
We see the same thing in our organizations. People with titles bossing others around without any kind of meaningful contribution.
Like a conductor without musicians, movement without direction is nothing but a lot of wasted effort. That direction must be both clear and specific.
But before we can assist in establishing a vision of possibility with our ensembles and teams, we must first be able to articulate our own.
Before we can shape the sound of an organization, we must first understand our own Leadership Tonality.
Just like a dancer needs choreography to bring meaning to motion, our leadership needs vision to bring purpose to progress.
As you reflect on your aspirational vision of possibility as a leader, consider the following:
What things are most important to you as a leader?
As a human being, what do you value the most?
What do you want to be known for?
What words would you want those you lead to use when describing what you do and how you do it?
If we want to have an impact, we must keep in our mind’s eye a clear vision of the kind of leader we want to be. Purpose is what aligns our work with our why. It acts as the glue that connects our intentions to our actions. Without purpose, we risk drifting aimlessly, with no clear direction.
Part of being an IN TONE leader is having clarity about the contribution you want your team to make. As the conductor-leader, that clarity begins with you. It starts with having a mental picture of the ideal outcome and the role you play in guiding others toward it.
When thinking about your contribution:
Why are you in your role on the team?
What is unique about your voice?
What do you alone bring to the group?
Why is it important?
This is all part of a larger leadership conversation explored in my book IN TONE Leadership. You can learn more HERE.
If you’d like to continue exploring these ideas in a more collaborative setting, I want to encourage you to check out The Conductor’s Circle mastermind experience, where we work in small groups to clarify the all-important concept of Leadership Tonality. You can learn more at THIS LINK.
In any team or creative environment, the value each person brings comes from the unique perspective and strengths they contribute to the whole. Next week, we’ll take a closer look at how to better understand the values shaping your leadership tonality—and how those values influence the impact you have as a leader.
Until the next rehearsal!
