About the piece

New Mercies I See is inspired by the timeless hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness written by Thomas Chisholm in 1923. The hymn, rooted in Chisholm’s personal reflections on God’s unwavering faithfulness, expresses profound gratitude for the constant mercies bestowed upon us each day. The lyric "Morning by morning new mercies I see" emphasizes the continuous cycle of blessings and grace, reminding us that, no matter our circumstances, God's provisions never cease.This piece is a musical expression of that gratitude and hope. 

The title, New Mercies I See, is drawn directly from the hymn's lyrics, intending to capture the idea that each new day is filled with divine blessings—that sustain and nurture us. The message of the hymn reflects Lamentations 3:22-23, which says, "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." This arrangement, along with the lyrics of the hymn, underscores the ongoing renewal of God's grace, offering hope and strength for today and tomorrow.

The piece is dedicated to my granddaughter, Amelia Claire, born in February 2025. I have always made it a habit to write specific music for my children, and this is the first of many projects that will be for the next generation. The lyrics of this hymn reflect my sincere prayer for her life. 

In the work, there are many direct and indirect references to our family. The oboe solo at the beginning represents her father, Marshall, who is a music educator as well. Amelia's aunt, Lauren, was also an oboist growing up.  Later in the piece, a trombone choir is presented in a conversation with a trumpet ensemble, the instrument of her mother, Caitlyn, and uncle Cameron respectively. The saxophone solo at the end represents our family matriarch, Whitney, as this is her primary instrument. 

My intent, as with all of the music I write in honor of my family, is to embed a music conversation of sorts into the text and texture of the work. 

This piece was premiered by the Stonebriar Wind Symphony at their annual Memorial Day concert in May 2025.

May this music inspire you to see the mercies that surround you, to give thanks for them, and to step into the future with the hope of God's constant presence guiding your way.
